Your Complete Moving Checklist: Relocating from California to Georgia

Moving across the country sounds like one big event. It’s actually dozens of smaller tasks that need to happen in a specific order, and missing any of them creates downstream complications that are annoying at best and expensive at worst. I’ve made this move and I’ve helped dozens of families navigate it. Here’s the checklist I wish I’d had.

3-6 Months Before Your Move Date

Get mortgage pre-approved. This is step one, not step five. Knowing your buying power determines everything else — where you look, what you offer, how quickly you can move. Pre-approval in Georgia can take 2-5 business days with a complete file; don’t start home shopping without it.

Research and select your target area. Georgia is not homogenous. Canton, Jasper, Alpharetta, Woodstock, Dahlonega — these are meaningfully different places with different commutes, schools, price points, and characters. Spend time understanding the differences before narrowing your search.

Plan an in-person relocation trip. A weekend driving around, looking at homes, having dinner in the town you’re considering, and talking to local people is irreplaceable. Do it before you’re under contract, not after.

Get multiple moving quotes. Full-service moving from California to Georgia ranges from $5,000 to $15,000+ depending on volume and timing. Book early — summer moves (June-August) command premium pricing and fill up quickly. Decluttering before the quote reduces costs.

Research Georgia schools. If you have school-age children, map your target neighborhoods to school district zones. Cherokee County, Pickens County, and Forsyth County all have different district structures. Enrollment in Georgia public schools typically requires proof of Georgia residency — you’ll need this documentation at registration.

2-3 Months Before

Notify key parties of your move. Employer (if you’re changing jobs or going remote), financial institutions, insurance companies, subscription services. The administrative tail of a cross-country move is longer than you expect.

Begin home shopping actively. With pre-approval in hand and your target area decided, you’re ready to look at homes seriously. Georgia’s market moves quickly in desirable areas — having your financing ready means you can move fast when the right home appears.

Handle California loose ends. California vehicle registration, voter registration, and any state-specific licenses or certifications you hold. Some California professional licenses have reciprocity arrangements with Georgia; others require new applications. Check your specific profession.

Start the California home sale process if applicable. If you own a California home, coordinate the sale timeline with your Georgia purchase. A licensed broker can help structure the contingency arrangements, though in competitive Georgia markets, contingent offers are less welcomed.

30-60 Days Before

Transfer school records. Request official transcripts, immunization records, and IEP or 504 documentation (if applicable) from your current school. Georgia schools will require these at enrollment.

Schedule medical and dental appointments. Get ahead of prescriptions, eyeglass prescriptions, and any ongoing care referrals before you lose access to your California providers. Establish new providers in Georgia early.

Confirm moving company and finalize logistics. Lock in your move date, confirm pickup and delivery windows, and purchase moving insurance if your goods aren’t covered by the mover’s liability limit.

Set up Georgia utilities. Georgia Power (electricity), natural gas providers, and internet/cable service all require advance setup. Many North Georgia rural properties use propane — factor in the delivery lead time for initial fill.

The Week of the Move

Change your address with USPS. Do this online at usps.com. The forwarding service takes 7-10 days to activate, so do it before you leave.

Document your California home’s condition. If renting, do a thorough walkthrough with dated photos before handing over keys.

Keep essentials accessible during transport. Medications, important documents (birth certificates, passports, insurance cards, financial documents), laptop, phone chargers, and a few days of clothing should travel with you, not in the moving truck.

First 30 Days in Georgia

Get a Georgia driver’s license. Georgia requires new residents to transfer their license within 30 days. Bring your California license, Social Security card, proof of Georgia residency (lease or closing documents), and proof of identity. Georgia DDS offices have varying wait times — go early in the week, early in the morning.

Register your vehicles in Georgia. Vehicle registration happens at your county tag office. You’ll need proof of Georgia insurance first — get Georgia auto insurance before you register. California plates should be switched within 30 days of establishing residency.

Register to vote. Georgia voter registration can be done online at georgia.gov. You’ll need your Georgia driver’s license or ID number.

Apply for the Homestead Exemption. If you purchased a home, file for the Homestead Exemption with your county tax assessor’s office. The deadline is typically April 1 for the current tax year. This reduces your property tax assessment and is worth doing immediately after closing.

Enroll children in school. Georgia public school enrollment requires proof of residency, birth certificate, immunization records, and previous school records. Each county school district has its own enrollment office — contact them directly for current requirements.

The Ongoing Work

Community connection doesn’t happen automatically — it requires showing up. Find the things in your community that align with who you are and do them consistently. Farmers markets, hiking groups, youth sports, church if that’s part of your life, neighborhood associations. The social network you had in California took years to build; the one in Georgia will too. Start early and stay with it.

The administrative part of this move is manageable. The community-building part takes the most time but delivers the most value. Both are worth doing well.
